DEPARTMENT OF PLASMA PHYSICS

LABORATORY OF EXPERIMENTAL PLASMA PHYSICS

Shock Wave (SW) Experiments

At the beginning of 1970-ies CO2 laser (λ = 10.6 μ) has been put into operation in our department. In starting phase the investigations have been mainly directed towards the development of applied – holographic laser methods. At the beginning of 1980-ies, when the energy of lasers increased up to 180 J, it became possible to obtain discharge in the focus of the laser and accordingly generation of both – laser plasma and shock wave. Later on, other – non-laser methods have been used for shock wave generation. All this has initiated establishment of shock wave investigation as a separate branch of studies in our department.
