RESEARCHE FOCUS

Plasma Physics Department has been founded by Prof. Nodar Tsintsadze in 1960 at the Institute of Physics of Georgian Academy of Sciences. From the very beginning the investigations are carried in both - theoretical and experimental direction. The main field of research is the plasma-wave interaction, non-linear processes, plasma transport, interaction of high power laser radiation with medium, laser plasma, ultra-high frequency (UHF) discharges, tokamak plasma characteristics – turbulence and its external control, development and implementation of laser, probe and UHF diagnostics of plasma, shock wave in neutral medium and plasma, non-neutral plasma, pulse plasma, plasma chemistry and numerous other topics related with them.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Since 1976 the specialization Plasma Physics has been introduced in Physics Department of Tbilisi State University. At the same time Department of Plasma Physics of the Institute of Physics has become base sub-department of the University. Lecture courses in all main fields of plasma physics are given by leading researchers of our department. Practical courses are given to students in the laboratories of the department and they prepare yearly essays and master thesis also in out department. New researchers coming to our department are mainly those whom we prepare ourselves in the department. Our graduating students successfully work in many leading plasma and thermonuclear centers of the world.

TBILISI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF PLASMA PHYSICS

Tbilisi International School in Plasma Physics and Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion has been established by Institute of Physics of Georgian National Academy in 1970 and since that has been organized once per two years. 10 such schools have took place. The last school has been organized in 1990. The lecture courses in the school have been given by leading scientists from Soviet Union and whole world. The school has been continuing for two weeks and in its framework the working meetings have been taking place in specific directions. 2-3 days of the school have been devoted to original presentations. In 2007 Institute of Physics organized the International Conference “The New Energy Sources” which is one of the stages for restoration of Tbilisi traditional school.
