In Andronikashvili Institute of Physics experimental investigations in plasma physics field has
been established in 1960 immediately after creation of the department.
On starting phase of experimental device construction and investigations close contacts have been developed with
Sokhumi Physical-Technical Institute (www.sipt.org), where lots of scientific and
technical experience together with all corresponding possibilities have been acquired in
experimental plasma physics field. Later the contacts have broaden and wide collaboration has
been developed with other leading plasma centers of Soviet Union such as St. Petersburg Ioffe
Physical-Technical Institute, Moscow Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute, Kharkov Physical-Technical
Institute, Novosibirsk Nuclear Physics Institute, Nizhni Novgorod Applied Physics Institute etc.
Since 1980 the contacts are established with leading European plasma centers where the intense
investigations in the field of Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion on tokamaks are going on. Since
1982 up to now in the framework of International Agreement intensive experimental
investigations are performed on the tokamaks of the Institute of Plasma Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences (www.ipp.cas.cz)
This way the contacts are established with other nuclear centers of EURATOM, such as German Research
Center – Forschungszentrum Jülich (www.fz-juelich.de/ief/ief-4//),
Cadarache Center of Atomic Energy Commissariat of France - CEA Cadarache (http://www-drfc.cea.fr/cea/ts/ts.htm )
etc.
First experimental investigations in the Plasma Physics Department of Andronikashvili Institute
of Physics have been performed on pulse devices in order to study the processes which
accompany the formation of dense plasma balls, their acceleration and appearance of cumulative
effects during their collision. Later the field of investigations widened and nowadays it includes
such topical problems of plasma physics as plasma-wave interaction in magnetic field,
development of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) methods of plasma heating and diagnostics, laser
plasma and laser diagnostics of plasma, shock waves in neutral medium and plasma, non-neutral
plasma etc.
